Meekness Is Not Weakness
Many people think that to be “meek” is to be “weak.” That is not true… According to Joyce Myer, “Meekness is strength under control.” It’s more like self control, over our actions.
The King James Version dictionary says that according to Matthew 11:29, Jesus gave himself as the example of meekness, “Christ says, ‘Learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest to your souls.'”
Jesus had all the power and authority of God, but only used it on certain occasions. Jesus was gentle and loving to children, to the people he talked to, the people he healed. Yet he showed his strength when he overturned tables in the synagogue, when they were cheating people and selling inside the sanctuary. He also had the power to save His own life from the cross, but He knew that was not the will of His Father, so He stayed and endured the pain, humiliation, and eventually, death.
Galatians 5:22-23 says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law,” (KJV).
Current day, this means to have humility; resignation; submission to the divine will, without murmuring or peevishness; opposed to pride, and arrogance. Being kind and forgiving, even those who do not ask for forgiveness. Love your neighbor as yourself, and remember that someone who is least loving, probably needs love the most.
I hope this helped dispel the misconception that meekness is weakness. It’s not. You can be strong in the Lord, but meek in spirit…just like Jesus.
